I look forward to using this strategy in my future classroom. Teacher [classroom]: Let`s see if we can do this quickly and turn offices into groups. Teacher [Interview]: Tribes is really a process in our district that starts in elementary school. Every student who goes into my classroom when I say it`s a Tribes classroom knows exactly what I`m talking about. There are many studies on how to socially involve students, intellectually involve students, and involve students emotionally. All three of these levels need to be addressed when I`m working with students, evaluating their work, they`re doing it – as a result of our next lessons, and they need to be part of that process, and Tribes is really a mindset that you have to have about that, and it offers some strategies to facilitate that.
Professor [Interview]: There are four tribe agreements. The first is attentive listening. You want to listen. This is the first agreement. The second agreement shows esteem, not people. So it`s an environment where I think about who helped me be a good learner, and I want to be able to appreciate that. The third agreement is the right to exist and the right to participate. When a student enters a room where they feel uncomfortable, they should simply be able to say passport and then come back. The fourth agreement is mutual respect. We want to respect all students for whoever they are when they come into the classroom and make room for them. Students are divided into groups, there are 4 tribe agreements.
You have to show esteem so as not to reject people. If they feel uncomfortable, they will not force to do the activity, they can happen. Tribes starts in primary school.. . . .
